D-DAY CELEBRATION DAY
To commemorate the 82nd Anniversary of D-Day on the 6th June 1944, in collaboration with Aero Legends, there will be a special day at Compton Abbas Airfield. The sun will shine, the engines will roar and history will come alive.
DUE TO THE POOR WEATHER BEFALLING US: We expect not to be flying on D-Day. You can expect to see Tiger Moth bi-plane, Spitfire (Elizabeth), North American T6G Harvard, and a Boeing Stearman. These will be on display in Hangar 1 with Aero Legends ground crew on hand to talk history, guide you round, take photos and possibly even a chance to have a look in the cockpits!
Our staff will be bringing the retro vibe alive on D-Day, as our own Lore of the Sky team will be given the opportunity to join in and dress up for the vintage festivities. They will be on hand to guide you round the site and
Delicious food and drinks will be available all day courtesy of Lore of the Sky. Bunting will be hoisted high and Lore of the Sky, The Smoking Barrels and the Horsebox Bar will all be open. Pop up pick and mix sweets will be visiting on the day, for all your rhubarb & custard or sugar barley requirements. Blending nostalgia with the Great British spirit,
Delicious food will be available from our indoor restaurant, Lore of the Sky and our pop up Hanger Takeaway Point, inside Hangar 1. Seating areas will be available throughout the under cover site, but we just ask if all our visitors could be courteous and share, in the true British Spirit.
Vintage vocalist, Sally will take you back to the 1940’s with some classic wartime hits and Shaftesbury Town Silver Band, boasting 25 talented musicians, will perform with the warmth and character that only a traditional silver band can. Celebrating the past, embracing the present, and showcasing the vibrant sound of Shaftesbury’s much-loved town band.
Artful Charlie – local renowned sign writer and mural artist will sadly not be joining us due to the weather and her art and paints needing to be outside for safety reasons.

We warmly invite vintage aircraft owners and pilots to fly in and take part in this commemorative day.
Aircraft types that participated in D-Day operations will receive:
- Free landing fee
- Free event tickets
Vintage aircraft built before 1960 will receive:
- Free event tickets
- Landing fees redeemable against the 1st purchase of food and drink from Lore of the Sky to the same value or greater.
Aircraft built after 1960 must purchase event tickets in addition to the landing fees.

- Gates will open from 10am to the general public, please have your tickets ready and follow the marshals guidance.
- We would appreciate your patience at busy times and be mindful our staff are working really hard so everyone can enjoy their day.
- Please remember this is primarily an outdoor occasion. We recommend you bring clothing, hats and sunscreen appropriate for the June weather.
- Seating available will be first come, first served and is not guaranteed. The grass area to the east of the display paddock is ideal for blankets and deck chairs if you wish to bring them along.
- Well behaved dogs on leads are permitted and water in bowls is provided, however shade is limited and we would always recommend owners weigh up the pros and cons of bringing your canine friend to a loud and busy environment.
Our D-Day Celebration Day is not an Air Show, so there will not be a programme available or set times to see things.
